My thoughts

I am actually going to do it!

This weekend, I am going to gather my creative juices, thoughts, processes and various other mojos, to create a new site. Due to some recent events in my life, its time to turn the glass half full again and do what I want to do.

I have a few dreams I am chasing, but the ultimate dream is to ‘do’ what I love to do. This has been my motto for so long and somehow it got lost in the hussle. One of my dreams is to be working in the post-production scene, especially working with typography. One of my other dreams and I always claimed this to be my hobby and not a career goal, is my photography. I have a photography business that I have been running on the side, but now that I had a taste of the pin-up style photography and my love for it, I am going to pursue the boudior setting. I am also going to continue to dabble with the wedding scene, but on a really small scale.

My first focus is to redesign my websites. I am going to create a demo reel for the post-production industry.

I have an opportunity to collaborate and do some valentines photoshoots, which is very exciting.

Its nerve wracking and exciting at the same time. I think I am actually going to be able to do this on my own!!

Selling my beloved Nikon D70s, lenses, bag - the one that started it all

yes, i am sad to announce that it is time for me to part with my beloved Nikon D70s. The SLR that started it all for me.

On the weekend, I had a bit of a mishap with my D200 and shattered my lens. The lens was $650 to replace and with the time of the year, it ate away at my christmas fund, PLUS, I am moving next weekend. Ahhh..everything all at once.

Anyway, if you are interested in my camera, call me at 604 790 6588 or email me.

thanks for looking

Type blooper

As I was in Kelowna this summer, we were at dinner and found this type blooper on the  menu. I usually enjoy the typography on the menus of this particular restaurant and their designs, but this was funny and titeling….;)

Found a very cool portfolio

through one of my RSS feeds this morning, I found this super cool one page portfolio. Its not your standard one page portfolio, because you just keep falling down and down into more work. I really like the colour scheme and the way they are standing out from the rest.

My first piece of “flair” (design)

I am excited to share my first design piece that is out in the public (other than the S2S web site).

I did the branding and logo design for Street to Snow Clothing and they just opened their store a couple weeks ago.

Check out my flair… pretty soon I will be sportin’ a suspender full of pieces of flair.

Finished Street to Snow Clothing’s website

Its pretty crazy how I ended up battling with IE and FF so much (particularly IE), but I got it done today and handed the keys over to the guys.

They wanted something simple, basic, easily maintained, as they are going to maintain this themselves and have not had a blog before.

Here is the site link
Street to Snow

I am going to take smart advice from my smart instructors and leave this one as a past experience, learn what I learned and move on.

Here is another cool typography video

I love this one, I have it on my Facebook and almost forgot about it. Watch it with the sound turned up

One of my goals

eventually when I gain more experience in the design industry, is to get into title sequencing. I love movies, but since awakening my typography chromosone, I pay close attention to the opening titling and then the end credits. I love it, its so exciting.

One of my favourite opening scenes is from the movie “Catch me if you can”.

I have so many that I love, but this one is a classic favourite among my Type/Motion buddies.
Casino Royale

I can go on forever, but here is one of my favourite typography shorts done with the movie Pulp Fiction. This was one of our examples in Typography class and it is still my favourite to this day. I can’t wait to continue my typography education in the fall.

Oh rounded corners, rounded corners….

After attempting to create (fluid) rounded corners in CSS with various tuts out there, I decided to just try it my own way. After playing around a little bit, I GOT IT! I just prefer the look of these corners much more when designing the blog style sites.

Here is a screen shot of my rounded corners from one of my dev sites.

I created four divs for each corner with small images. This way I can reuse the divs throughout the site.

August 20|08 Another week flying by

Time is just flying by and I am still working hard on distributing my portfolios within the industry.  At this time, I am also sketching and building a creative brand for my own design company and it is working well.

Branding is really something I love to do and I also love to work. In a few short weeks, I am starting the next phase of my educational path. The two classes I am signed up for are typography 2 and ideation 1. The instructor for typography 2 is a great person and amazing typographer, so I am really looking forward to his classes. I am also looking forward to ideation. In January, I will be taking Studio 1 which is a strong focus on pre-print press, which is something that is really needed in this industry.

I am still working on the general appearance of Street to Snow clothing and that should be up and running very soon.

Thats it for now…tooodeloooo
